Altı Aylık yeni yerinde

16 Kasım’da Çukurcuma’da açılacak olan Altı Aylık, Wasp T-shirt ve Deform Plak dükkanlarıyla dönüşümlü olarak aynı mekanı paylaşıyor. Altı Aylık birlikte var olmak üzerine kurulu. Varlığımızı sadece bir dükkana eklemlenerek devam ettirmek anlamında değil, aynı zamanda kolektif düşünce ve bilgi üretimi için de aracı olmak temel hedeflerimizden biri.
Altı Aylık, karakterini oluşturan bu birlikteliğin çeşitli anlamlarını ve yaratacağı imkanları araştırarak, farklı fikirleri ifade etmek ve gerçekleştirmek üzere fırsat sunmayı amaçlıyor. Tüm bu oluşum içinde somut sonuçlara odaklanmak yerine, sürecin bir parçası olarak var olmayı amaçlıyoruz. Kemiklesmis bir grup olmak yerine, rolleri değistirerek, farklılaştırarak risk almayı deneyimlemek istiyoruz.

Kolektif düşünce ve bilgi üretimini en üst düzeyde tutabilmek için, Altı Aylık, birbirinden bağımsız ve birbirini destekleyen, dört farklı kolu bir arada gerçekleştirmeyi hedefliyor. Bu dallar; işlik (sanatsal üretim), misafir (fikir alışverişi) cam (görsel sunumlar), ile (destekçi).

WASP T-shirt dükkanıyla aynı mekanı paylaştığımız için, tekstil ve baskı üretimine dair tüm araçları kullanabilme şansımız var. İşlik, bu malzeme ile çalışmak isteyen sanatçılara olanak sağlayacak.

Misafir’in ana fikri, farklı kuşaklardan sanatçıları davet ederek, kendi aralarında birbirinden beslenen bir diyalog başlatabilmek. Günümüzdeki sanat eğitiminde kayıp halkalar (kuşaklar arası kopukluk, eksik bilgi) olduğu düşünülürse, yaratılacak olan bu alanın önemli bir boşluğu dolduracağını hissediyoruz.

T-shirt dükkanının vitrini olan cam, mekanın çift karakterli doğasını en iyi yansıtan unsur. Gündüzleri bir t-shirt dükkanı olarak faaliyet gösteren mekan, geceleri Altı Aylık tarafından devralınıyor. Bununla beraber, gündüzleri ara yüz olarak işleyen camekanda Altı Aylık’ın faaliyetlerinden izler bulunacak. Altı Aylık’ın cephesi olan cam, bir seri farklı malzeme ile gündemdeki projeler hakkında bilgi veriyor.

İle’nin amacı kişilere kendileri için önemli konular hakkında projelerini oluşturma ve gerçeklestirme imkanı vermek. İkinci motivasyon ise başka vizyonları, yaklaşımları ve görüşleri dahil ederek sorular sormak ve bunları tartışabilmek için ortak bir zemin yaratabilmek. İle , Altı Aylık’ın rol değişimini yansıtıyor: Büyümeye açık bir grup olarak fikir üretirken başkalarının da fikirlerini dahil ederek sanatsal pratiklere farklı yaklaşımlar getirmek.

Alti Aylik Relocated

Alti Aylik will open on November 16th in a new location in Çukurcuma, time-sharing the space with the t-shirt shop Wasp and the record shop Deform. The nature of Alti Aylik is a form of co-existence, not only with the shop, but also as a mediator for collective intelligence. We are questioning various ways of co-existence and offer room for verbalizing and materializing ideas. We understand ourselves to be part of a process rather than focusing on concrete results. We are not relying on a fixed body of people, instead we are taking the risk of shifting roles.

In order to achieve the highest output of collective intelligence, Alti Aylik will be structured by four branches that implement artistic production, the exchange of ideas, visual presentation and roles of assistance. These are işlik (Atelier), misafir (Guest), cam (Window), ile (With).

As we are hosted by Wasp T-Shirts we have access to all aspects of textile and printing production facilities So with işlik, we have the possibility to offer artists to work with this medium.

The idea of misafir is to invite artists from different generations to become actively involved in a mutual exchange. This area of communciation is important because we feel that there are too many areas of missing knowledge which is also not compensated for by todays art education.

Cam is the shop window. It most clearly shows the double character of the space which is a T- shirt shop in the day time and taken over by Alti Aylik in the evening. Nevertheless during shop hours one can still find traces of Alti Aylik’s activities. The facade of Alti Aylik cam will display a series of moving and standing images as well as current project information.

The concept of ile is to assist people to initiate and realize projects about issues which are burning for them. The second motivation is to include other people's vision, approach and point of view in order to raise questions and create a common ground of discussion. İle reflects Alti Aylik’s shifting of roles, as we are an open group which will grow, generate ideas and include others’ opinions in order to form a space that accepts different approaches to artistic practice.

Alti Aylik lost its physical gallery space a couple of months ago, so we are now trying to transform the project into a more flexible structure that uses any kind of space except a settled one.

For the exhibition “all about lies” at Apartman Projesi we are creating our own space that does not interfere with the actual gallery space and instead exists as a series of multiples that easily spread out into the public arena.

Inspired by the specific location of Apartman Projesi in one of the gastronomical centers of Istanbul we have chosen to work with the single packed refreshment towels as a medium to present Alti Aylik. These scented towels are very common in Turkey, often given out after meals to keep one’s hands fresh and clean. For “all about lies” the wrapping of these towels becomes the space for the artwork and in this way it communicates easily with everyone that uses them.

The first motif to be applied is the “clean hands/temiz eller” gesture, presented as a naive drawing of a hand with the fingers crossed behind the back, it is a sign used to indicate that the finger-crosser does not mean what he is saying, or is being compelled to act through coercion. (A typical childhood trick is to surreptitiously cross one's fingers behind one's back while making a promise, a token that supposedly shields the finger-crosser from the obligation of upholding the terms of his oath.) With this gesture the perpetrator is trying to keep his/her hands clean, albeit purposefully going along with a lie. And lying is a common thing: According to scientific research we all lie approximately 200-300 times a day.
The words “clean hands/temiz eller” also refers to the international operation against corruption that started in Italy in 1992 under the motto “mani pulite” and that was later initiated in Turkey as “temiz eller” to fight mafia structures in the system.

On July 23rd, 2006, the life of 18 year old Zuleyka Rivera changed forever as she was crowned Miss Universe 2006 live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California.

Hailing from Salinas, Puerto Rico, a small coastal town off the Caribbean Sea, Zuleyka is the eldest of three children. Extremely close with her two younger brothers, she has always considered family to be her top priority. “My parents always provided both my brothers and me with all the necessities in life, but taught us that that what matters most is being a part of a united, loving family where respect and honesty prevail.”

An aspiring actress, Zuleyka has already worked on several commercials and television programs, as well as tested her skills as an emcee. “I would love to be a crossover actress and work in both Latino and American cinema.” The 5’ 9” Latina hopes to distinguish herself with determination, courage and self-confidence; three traits she feels have defined her as a young woman.

When she is not representing her native country Puerto Rico, or presently, the Universe, Zuleyka enjoys working up a sweat with activities like jogging, spinning, weightlifting and dancing. She is also a self-professed fan of the Latin version of “American Idol.”

As Miss Universe, Zuleyka will spend the next year championing the official causes of MISS UNIVERSE®, which include increasing HIV/AIDS awareness by focusing on women's health and reproductive issues as well as forging relationships with organizations committed to research and education, such as the Global Health Council, God’s Love We Deliver, GMHC (Gay Men’s Health Crisis) and amfAR.

Apartment Project, an art initiative producing contemporary art projects since 1999, presents `All About Lies” bringing together work - paintings, drawings, videos and objects - by 60 participants from different disciplines to be exhibited in its 23m2 space.

In the exhibition brochure the project’s designer and coordinator Selda Asal describes it briefly:

When you stay abroad for some reason or other people usually prefer to ask you questions about politics rather than trying to understand your exhibition or talking about art. This is the moment when Turkey - a country that has made a rule of giving evasive answers - weighs down on you with all its sins and good deeds. Things we were taught, that were transmitted to us, things we learned through our own efforts, those we learned from writers we trust, things we know, the many things that are veiled etc. etc..a complex process_ lies, truths, slight truths, lightened truths, strategically reformulated truths, presupposed truths_

This exhibition is about expressing, being able to articulate lies, pretenses and illusions we are always entangled in at the points they touch us.
